Tijs Verwest, alias Tiësto, voorganger van de wereld-overheersende Nederlandsche dj-vloot, komt thuis in Breda. Vrijdag 22 december presenteert hij zijn nieuwe album ‘Clublife Vol. 5 – China’ in de nieuwe evenementenhal van Breepark. Het is zijn grootste solo-show ooit in zijn bakermat. Een cirkel raakt zo rond, maar hij blijft hongerig naar nieuwe avonturen. This Is Our House had een uitgebreid gesprek met Tiësto in Amsterdam. “Een echte hit is voor mij nog steeds een club banger, geen radio-pophit.”

We hadden ‘m al wel hoog zitten. Tijs Verwest, voor miljoenen wereldwijd vooral bekend als Tiësto (48), is de enige echte aartsvader van ons internationale dj-legioen. Na de incubatie van zijn eigenzinnige trance-sound rond de millenniumwisseling, schoot hij vanuit de kleine club Spock in Breda omhoog naar het ultieme sterrendom. Tot Disney World en de Olympische Spelen aan toe.

En de energie van toen is er nog steeds. Een drive die hem siert. In woord, daad én uiterlijk blijft hij anno 2017 een jonge, enthousiaste hond. Na een uur lang praten lijkt het alsof hij net begonnen is met z’n carrière. Klaar is hij in ieder geval nog lang niet. En zijn palmares blijft groeien en doorontwikkelen. 

New York

We ontmoeten hem in een luxe hotel aan een Amsterdamse gracht. Nog geen etmaal eerder landde hij op Schiphol, vanuit New York, waar hij meestentijds woont nu. “Vanuit daar is het maar 6 uur tijdsverschil. En ik heb het geluk dat ik altijd comfortabel kan reizen.”

Fris en opgeladen zit hij nu tegenover ons. Vol vuur te vertellen over zijn passie en liefde. Dan mag je van ons best je grijze haren een beetje verven. Verder oogt Tiësto topfit. “Gezond leven, via sport en voeding, dat helpt ook”, zegt hij nuchter.

En dan te bedenken dat hij na het landen eerst nog even naar Breda reed. Thuis naar moeders. En om een hele hoop Bredase stichtingen en verenigingen blij te maken. In totaal 100.000 euro doneerde hij aan leefbaarheid in Breda. Het buurthuis van zijn jeugd, het zorgcentrum, zijn oude voetbalclub, de DJ School International.

Ereburgerschap Breda

Nadat hij eerder dit jaar het ereburgerschap van Breda had gekregen, besloot hij iets terug te doen voor de stad. In overleg met burgemeester Depla kwam hij tot het idee voor het feest, en samen kozen ze de goede doelen. “Ik ben blij en dankbaar voor wat ik als Bredase jongen allemaal heb mogen bereiken”, zegt hij.

En dan was hij ook nog in het nieuws vanwege zijn aanstaande huwelijk. Tiësto gaat trouwen met het Amerikaanse model Annika, maar liefst 27 jaar jonger dan haar bruidegom.

“Liefde valt moeilijk te sturen, maar onze situatie is wel een uiterst geval natuurlijk. Mensen om ons heen waren eerst kritisch maar zien nu dat dit serieus is. Zo’n leeftijdsverschil zou niet voor iedereen werken. Maar doordat mijn carrière zo is gelopen, heeft het gewoon zo uitgepakt.”

Het staat niet op zichzelf. Muzikaal is hij altijd op zoek gegaan naar verjonging, of op zijn minst vernieuwing. Met zijn album ‘Kaleidoscope’ en zijn label Musical Freedom gooide hij het roer zo’n 10 jaar geleden al flink om.

Niet iedereen was daar blij mee, vooral niet in Europa. Tiësto liet de trance immers ver achter zich en ontwikkelde een nieuwe sound met rock- en indie-invloeden. Hij richtte zijn pijlen op Amerika, waar hij een heel nieuw, jong publiek opbouwde toen EDM daar doorbrak.

“Ik heb sindsdien vele, vele aparte hoogtepunten gehad”, zegt Tiësto. “Maar eigenlijk ben ik daar het meest trots op: dat ik mezelf heb weten te vernieuwen. En dat ik, mede daardoor, heb kunnen gaan samenwerken met jongens als Avicii, Martin Garrix en Hardwell.”

Het zijn enkele van zijn beste vrienden geworden. “In hen zie ik zoveel drive en energie. Daar wil ik me graag mee omringen. En ik vind het mooi om ze een beetje te coachen met de ervaring die ik heb opgebouwd.”

Azië

Nu EDM in de VS over zijn hoogtepunt heen is (‘qua evenementen is het nog wel groot, maar de radio laat het er nu helemaal links liggen’) is hij alweer een nieuw avontuur gestart. Al maakt hij vanwege zijn relatie nu iets ‘bewustere’ keuzes qua shows en reizen, in Azië heeft Tiësto letterlijk en figuurlijk een nieuwe jeugd aangeboord. Daar is dance nu, in de slipstream van economische groei, keihard aan het doorbreken onder jongeren. En hij staat front row. Alweer.

Niet door te kopiëren wat nu in de VS nog wél werkt op de radio: poppy liedjes met een elektronisch randje. “Zo’n act als Chainsmokers doet geweldige dingen, maar het is een radio-sound. Daar is niks mis mee, als je je daar op richt. Maar ik ben en blijf een dance-dj. De four to the flour-beat zal ik niet snel verlaten. Het draait om het feest, om het dansen. Een echte hit voor een dj is voor mij geen radiohit, maar een dansvloerhit.”

Zijn nieuwe album ‘Clublife Vol. 5 – China’, waarvan zijn show in Breepark in het teken staat, mag gerust een statement heten. Geen popliedjes, maar ‘club bangers’, zoals hij ze zelf noemt. “Want in China gaat het echt los, en niet op popliedjes.”

Wel op ‘Boom’ (met Sevenn) en ‘C’mon’ (met o.a. Diplo), enkele van de grote klappers op ‘Clublife Vol. 5’. Het is energieke EDM, vol power en met een maximaal dansvloer-effect.

Clublife Vol. 5 – China

Werkt dat ook in Nederland? Dat valt ook voor Tiësto nog maar te bezien. “Als je al meer dan 20 jaar meedraait, zie je je publiek natuurlijk flink veranderen. Jonge fans willen meer de sound van ‘Clublife China’ horen, wat oudere vinden mijn after hours-tracks en vooral ook de vroegere trance gaaf.”

Uitdaging

In Breda zal het zeker ook een brede mix van bezoekers zijn, verwacht hij. Alleen al omdat bijvoorbeeld ook het college van burgemeesters en wethouders vertegenwoordigd is. Net als enkele Kamerleden en afgevaardigden van de goede doelen – Breda loopt breed uit voor Tiësto.

“Voor mijzelf is dat alleen maar leuk. De mogelijkheid hebben om alles te kunnen draaien, en te ontdekken wat werkt. Dat is nog steeds je belangrijkste taak als dj.” Eigenlijk nog steeds hetzelfde als destijds in de Spock, die overigens tot Tijs’ tevredenheid nieuw leven wordt ingeblazen. “En dat maakt het iedere keer tot een uitdaging.”

Natuurlijk scheelt het dat hij nu een ster is. Mensen lijken het soms allemaal goed te vinden, puur omdat hij er staat doen ze de handjes wel in de lucht. Tiësto: “Maar dan is het toch de kunst om ze verder mee te nemen, naar een randje van nieuwe en verrassende dingen.”

Tiësto discovers a new youthfulness in music – and in love

Tijs Verwest, alias Tiësto, the pioneering DJ spearheading the global domination of Dutch DJs, is heading home, to Breda, the Netherlands. On Friday 22nd December, he is presenting his new album ‘Clublife Vol. 5 – China’ in the brand new Breepark Events Hall. It will be his biggest ever solo show in his hometown. It’s a return to roots, but he remains hungry for new adventures. This Is Our House enjoyed an in-depth interview with Tiësto in Amsterdam, and he was clear about thing in particular: “For me, a real hit isn’t a radio pop hit. It’s still a club banger.”

We were already big fans. Tijs Verwest (48), known to millions worldwide as Tiësto, remains the unrivalled leading light of Dutch DJs. Having birthed his own distinctive trance sound around the turn of the new century, he launched himself to stardom, making an epic journey from Breda’s Club Spock to the dizzy heights of Disney World and the Olympic Games.

His former energy is still intact. It’s an engaging vitality that suits him so well in 2017, a youthful brio obvious in the way he looks and acts, and the way he speaks. An hour into the interview and he’s talking as if he’s only just setting out on his career. And he’s certainly not quitting anytime soon! His list of achievements keeps on growing and evolving.

New York

We meet him in a luxury hotel on an Amsterdam canal. He’d just arrived from Schiphol Airport, having flown in from New York where he currently lives for most of the year. “It’s only a six hour time difference”, he says, “and luckily I always get to travel comfortably.”

He sits opposite us, fresh and fully recharged, and speaks with real intensity about the things he loves and cherishes. We can certainly overlook a few dyed grey hairs because he looks in great shape. He’s very matter-of-fact about that: “living healthily, doing sport and eating well – that helps too,”  he explains.

And bear in mind that after landing on Dutch soil, he drove straight to Breda, to visit his mother. Also to bring some joy to numerous clubs and organisations in his hometown. In total, he donated more than 100,000 euros to local organizations in Breda, to his old community center, to a care center, to his old soccer club, to DJ School International.

Honorary citizenship of Breda

After being awarded honorary citizenship of Breda earlier this year, he decided to give something back to the city. In consultation with Mayor Depla, he came up with the idea for the party. Together they selected charitable causes. “I am so happy and grateful for what I have been able to achieve as a boy from Breda”, he says.

His forthcoming marriage also made the news this week. Tiësto will wed the American model Annika, 27 years his junior.

“Love is a very unpredictable thing, and with us it’s an extreme case of course. People close to us had their doubts at first but now they can see how serious we are.”

Nothing happens out of the blue. Musically, he is constantly searching for rejuvenation, or innovation at the very least. He’d already caused a big stir around 10 years ago with his album ‘Kaleidoscope’ and his  label Musical Freedom.

Not everyone was happy, particularly in Europe.  Tiësto distanced himself from trance, developing a new style with elements of rock and indie music. He set his sights on America, where he began building up a whole new young audience at the time EDM made its big breakthrough.

“Since then I’ve had many many different high points”, says Tiësto. “But that’s actually what I’m proudest of, that I’ve been able to reinvent myself. And that partly due to that, I’ve been able to work with guys like Avicii, Martin Garrix and Hardwell.”

He numbers them among his best friends. “They’ve got so much drive and energy. I want to be around people like that. And it’s great to be able to coach them a bit, to pass on some of my experience.”

Asia

Now that the best days of EDM in the USA seem to be over (“the events are still big, but the radio stations are pretty much ignoring us”), he is once again embarking on a new adventure. Though his relationship means that he may have to reign in the flying and performing, Tiësto  is nonetheless rediscovering his youth in Asia. Dance music is riding the slipstream of economic growth and making a huge breakthrough among Asian youth. And once again, he is at the forefront.

But it’s not about copying what goes down well on American radio stations: poppy tracks with an electronic flavour. “Acts like Chainsmokers are doing really great stuff, but it’s a radio sound. Nothing wrong with that, if that’s what you want to do. But I am and always have been a dance DJ. I’m loath to give up the four to the floor beat. The party is the important thing, the dancing. For a DJ to make a hit, it’s got to be a dancefloor hit, not a radio hit. That’s how I see it.”

Make no mistake: Tiësto’s new album ‘Clublife Vol. 5 – China’, which his forthcoming show in Breepark is promoting, represents a statement. There are no pop songs, only ‘club bangers’ in Tiësto’s own words. “In China, they go wild, and not for pop songs”, he says.

Tracks like ‘Boom’ (with Sevenn), and ‘C’mon’ (featuring Diplo, among others) are a few of the big tracks on ‘Clublife Vol. 5 – China’. They should have the desired effect. This is energetic EDM, packed with power for maximum dancefloor impact.

Will it catch fire in the Netherlands? For Tiesto too that remains to be seen. As he remarks, “When you’ve been spinning records for more than 20 years, you do notice the crowds change a lot. The younger fans are more into the ‘Clublife China’ sound, whereas the older ones love the after hours tracks and especially the earlier trance.”

He expects that Breda will draw a mixed crowd, not the least because local mayors and municipal councillors will join the fans. And when you add in a smattering of politicians and representatives of local charities, it’s clear that Breda will be solidly represented at Tiësto’s gig.

“I think it’s just great”, he says. “The possibility to be able to play anything, and find out what works. That’s still a DJ’s most important task. That’s why every time you play it’s a fresh challenge.”

His current star status obviously makes a big difference. It might seem that people are into the music and pump their hands in the air simply because it’s him up there, but as Tiësto says, “it’s the art of taking them on a journey that counts, bringing them with you to a zone where new and surprising things happen.”
