Het aller-donkerste dubstep label ter wereld, Crowsnest Audio, brengt jaarlijks een compilatiealbum uit. Ditmaal op 31 oktober, de dag van Halloween. TIOH’s Wessel Hop beluisterde de 3e editie van het album vast, en kreeg exclusief de tracklist in handen.

Maar liefst 17 artiesten, verspreid over 16 tracks, telt het Halloween-album van Crowsnest Audio. Het Duitse label staat al jaren garant voor het opgraven van de rauwste en hardste bass die er te vinden valt. Het label van Code:Pandorum is geen onbekende bij ons. Zo hebben wij de labelbaas zelf, Qoiet en Autodrive, al eerder gesproken. Alle drie de heren staan op de tracklist van de nieuweling.

We zien daarop meerdere terugkerende namen vergeleken met de editie van vorig jaar. Enkele van de ‘nieuwe’ namen hebben al erkenning ontvangen op Crowsnest Audio, met soloreleases. Zoals Barocka, met de gruwelijk harde dubstepplaat ‘Surreal’, en Badfella met diens helse 4-track ‘The Vortex EP’. En Superwet, die met ‘Obey EP’ de electro-house een nieuw en speaker-mollend jasje gaf.

Kasaey en andere verrassingen

Onder de tracks zien we ook enkele echte verrassingen. Zo tekent Code:Pandorum zelf voor ‘Overlord’ met Circus Records’ eigen AXEN. En in de openingstrack zien we de kersverse producer Kasaey, direct overkomend van het in Toulouse bruisende Coliseum Records. Een volgende opvallende naam is Heaven Fell, die recentelijk een plek heeft bemachtigd op het ‘Biggest Remix Competition Of All Time’-album van het machtige Disciple Recordings.

En hoe klinkt ‘Crowsnest Elite 3’? Met de experimentele invloeden die de afgelopen jaren populairder zijn geworden in elektronische muziek is ook veel veranderd in dit complete uiterste van het spectrum. Het is niet alleen maar bruut harde dubstep op dit album.

Kasaey’s openingsplaat ‘Zagreus’ is een ongrijpbaar nummer waar de creativiteit vanaf spat. Alles klopt nét wel en tegelijk nét niet, het is een soort cocktail aan zaagtand-elementen. Ook de afsluitende track ‘Krakenfall’ van TenGraphs omarmt een compleet verschillende stijl door van midtempo-invloeden in drop één te switchen naar high-energy crossbreed in drop twee.

Rillerige atmosfeer

De rustigste plaat op het album is de minimal- en ambient riddim-plaat ‘Jjaro’ van bekendere FaceSplit. Maar dat doet niet af aan de rillerige atmosfeer van het nummer. Dit geldt ook voor de ‘Haihōsu’ track van Forreign, een tamelijk tamme hybrid trap-plaat waar duidelijk de focus ligt op het ontwikkelen van walgelijke sounds die het live ongetwijfeld heel goed gaan doen.

Natuurlijk is er ook goede dubstep op het album te vinden. Beide platen van Code:Pandorum, ‘Overlord’ en ‘Everyone’s The Same’, bijvoorbeeld. En we krijgen de nodige switch-ups te horen. Persoonlijk vind ik Tremorr’s ‘Death Hole’ een van de hardste creaties. Hier spelen prachtige, felle percussies in dodelijke harmonie met krakende basslines en rammende drums.

Hard bass at Halloween: An exclusive preview of ‘Crowsnest Elite #3’

Crowsnest Audio, the darkest dubstep label on earth, launches their yearly compilation album. This year on the 31st of October, Halloween. This Is Our House’s Wessel Hop pre-listened the 3rd installment and, exclusively, got hands on its tracklist.

No less than 17 artists spread out across 16 tracks. The German household has been known for digging up the most gritty and raw bass sounds that are known to exist. Code:Pandorum’s label is not unfamiliar with us, as we’ve spoken to the label boss before, as well as Qoiet and Autodrive. All three gentlemen are to be found on this year’s tracklist (see below).

We see multiple recurring names compared to last year. Some of the ‘new’ names have already received recognition with solo releases at the label like Barocka with gruesomely hard dubstep work ‘Surreal’, Badfella with his hellish 4-track ‘The Vortex EP’ and Superwet who completely demolished the genre of electro house with the ‘Obey EP’.

Surprising calls

Amongst the tracks we find several surprising calls. For example, Code:Pandorum himself has the collab ‘Overlord’ with Circus Records’ very own AXEN. The opening track gives us new kid on the block Kasaey, who comes over from the effervescent Toulouse-based Coliseum Records. Another eye-opening track is the one from Heaven Fell, who recently managed to work himself onto the ‘Biggest Remix Competition Of All Time’ album by the mighty Disciple Recordings.

With the experimental influences that have emerged within electronic music over the last years, stuff has even changed in the farthest ends of the spectrum. It is not just brutal dubstep on the album. Kasaey’s opening tune ‘Zagreus’ is an unfathomable song that screams creativity; everything feels slightly on the spot and off-center at the same time, a cocktail of sawtooth-elements. The closer-track ‘Krakenfall’ by TenGraphs embraces a completely different mixture of styles that switches from drop one’s midtempo-influences towards a high-energy crossbreed drop in the second half of the tune.

FaceSplit

The calmest record on the album is the minimal and ambientic riddim work ‘Jjaro’ by the familiar FaceSplit, but that doesn’t take away the eerie atmosphere of the track. That also counts for Forreign’s ‘Haihōsu’ tune, a relatively relaxed hybrid trap strain where the focus is clearly on creating the most disgustingly shaped sounds that will undoubtedly do well live.

Of course we can find good dubstep on the album as well. Both of Code:Pandorum’s pieces ‘Overlord’ and ‘Everyone’s The Same’ beautifully play around the genre and we get the necessary switch-ups as well. Personally, I think Tremorr’s ‘Death Hole’ is one of the hardest creations where intense percussion goes hand in hand with creaking basslines and pumping drums.
