Eindelijk is voor veel hardcore-liefhebbers hét grote moment daar. Nadat Thunderdome jarenlang met vallen en opstaan de grootste podia veroverde, keert het memorabele event terug in een wel heel nieuw jasje. Er is namelijk een documentaire gemaakt, genaamd ‘Thunderdome Never Dies – The Full Story’, die vanaf 14 november in de bioscoop zal draaien. TIOH-redacteur Sam was bij de première en daarmee een van de gelukkigen die de film al mocht bekijken. En dat hij spraakmakend is, dat is zeker.
Thunderdome omschreef de documentaire zelf al als een trip down memory lane. Hierin zijn ze zeker geslaagd.
Dj’s, pioniers en gabbers van toen en nu komen aan het woord. Van het dj-Dreamteam waar het ooit mee begon, bestaande uit The Prophet, Buzz Fuzz, Dano en Gizmo, tot de piepjonge Sefa die pas net in het vak komt kijken. Van ID&T- en tevens Thunderdome-oprichters Duncan Stutterheim en Irfan Ewijk tot de organisatie van nu. Van gabber Dennis de Kok, die al sinds de eerste editie een trouwe bezoeker is, tot gabbers Bojan en Caelis de Kok, bij wie Thunderdome door vader Dennis met de paplepel is ingegoten.
Verbondenheid en saamhorigheid. Dat zijn de juiste woorden om Thunderdome en de bijhorende scene mee te beschrijven. Heb je het niet over de onderlinge band van de gabbers, die echt verbroederd zijn met elkaar – wat ontzettend mooi verbeeld wordt in de documentaire – dan wel over François Maas. Hij is dé man die altijd zijn nek is blijven uitsteken voor Thunderdome en de liefhebbers. De man wiens emoties in de documentaire duidelijk naar voren komen en wiens gedrevenheid en motivatie van de bioscoopschermen afspat.
Want het is echt zo; Thunderdome Never Dies
Deze documentaire laat zien dat Thunderdome niet iets is van alleen de jaren ’90, maar iets van altijd. Een cultuur die voortleeft onder mensen over de hele wereld.
Thunderdome is niet ‘zomaar een feest’ waarbij een groepje kale mensen met knagende kaken in hun Aussies de hele nacht staan te hakken en zagen. Nee, het is meer dan dat. Wat in 1992 is begonnen als een schoolfeest, maakt anno 2019 nog steeds veel los bij de liefhebbers. Bij sommigen zelfs zoveel dat ze The Wizard, het bekende logo van het event, voor altijd op hun huid laten vastleggen.
Thunderdome heeft dan wel z’n dipje en pauze gehad, maar het gevoel blijft doorleven. Dat echte Thunderdome-gevoel had niet beter vertolkt kunnen worden, daarin zijn de makers zeer geslaagd. Ik zou dan ook geen betere titel voor deze documentaire kunnen bedenken. Want het is echt zo; Thunderdome Never Dies.
Of de documentaire een aanrader is om te kijken? Zeker. Ook als je niet van hardcore houdt, nooit naar Thunderdome bent geweest en helemaal niks snapt van de hele gabbercultuur. Misschien ga je het door deze documentaire juist wél snappen. Het verhaal wordt zo passievol, emotioneel en eerlijk verteld met de juiste beelden. Hierdoor kan je de scene alleen maar gaan respecteren en accepteren zoals hij is.

The times has finally come for many hardcore-lovers. After Thunderdome’s years of trial and error conquering the biggest stages, the memorable event finds its way back with a completely different look. The new documentary, called ‘Thunderdome Never Dies – The Full Story’, will be shown on the big screen as of November 14th. TIOH-editor Sam attended the premiere and was lucky enough to watch the film. One thing is certain. It is a remarkable sit.
Thunderdome personally described the documentary as a trip down memory lane, in which they have definitely succeeded.
DJ’s, pioneers and gabbers from then and now got the chance to express themselves. From the DJ Dreamteam with which it started, consisting of The Prophet, Buzz Fuzz, Dano and Gizmo, till the youngster Sefa who has only recently joined the scene. From ID&T and Thunderdome founders Duncan Stutterheim and Irfan Ewijk till the organization as we currently know it. From gabber Dennis de Kok, who has been a loyal visitor since day one, till gabbers Bojan and Caelis de Kok, for whom Thunderdome has been spoon fed to them by their father Dennis.
Brotherhood and solidarity. Those are the right words to describe Thunderdome and the corresponding scene. If you are not talking about the bond between gabbers, who are truly fraternized with each other – which is incredibly well depicted in the documentary – you will be chatting about François Maas. He is the man who has never stopped putting his heart and soul into Thunderdome and its fans. The man whose emotions clearly see the light of day in the documentary and whose enthusiasm and motivation bursts out of the movie screen.
It really is true; Thunderdome never dies
This documentary shows that Thunderdome is not just something from the 90s, but something timeless. A lifestyle that finds its way all around the world.
Thunderdome is not ‘just another party’ where a group of baldheaded people with grinding teeth ”hak” all night in their Aussies. No, it is way more than that. What started out as a school party in 1992, still evokes lots of feel with the lovers as of 2019. For some people that goes as far as commemorating the infamous logo of the franchise – The Wizard – with a tattoo.
Like every other thing, Thunderdome has had its fair share of slumps. Yet the feeling continues to thrive. That real Thunderdome-feel could not have been conveyed better, which the creators surely succeeded at. That said, I could not have thought of a better title for the documentary. It really is true; Thunderdome Never Dies.
Whether or not the documentary is worth the while? Definitely. Even if hardcore is not your cup of tea, never been to Thunderdome and do not understand the gabber culture. This documentary could just be the turning point for that. The story is told so full of passion, emotion and honesty with the use of the right footage. Thanks to this you can only start to accept and respect the scene as it is.
